Aquatic adventures: From floating art installations to air-breathing fish.

Whether it is sailing in from sea or swimming underneath it, we can see good trends coming. And we have a few for dry land too.

ART: Swimming Cities of Serenissima

The Swimming Cities of Serenissima is a fleet of three handmade boats manned by a crew of artists traveling the Adriatic Sea from Slovenia to Venice. Designed by the visual artist SWOON, the three floating sculptures are made from salvaged materials and are adorned with murals and installation by SWOON and other designers.

The crew is made up of performance artists, photographers, and musicians who make a fascinating cast of characters and have been documenting their adventure the whole way.

When we first read about this project we were not sure that these pieces of art would actually survive their journey but they have successfully arrived in Venice and are now docked off the coat of Certosa Island and will be on display all week as part of the Venice Biennale. The boats and crew will also offer intimate performances that incorporate music, shadow puppetry, and story.

SWOON's artwork can be seen all over the world and in a variety of media. Over the past ten years we have watched SWOON'S artwork spread from the streets of Brooklyn, across the walls of New York City, then onto the walls of galleries and museums, and now out onto the open water. Ahoy!

FOOD: Hidden Kitchen

Cooking up a ten-course meal can be a daunting task even for a seasoned restaurant kitchen, but the couple who run Hidden Kitchen do it twice a week out of their Paris apartment. Those who snag one of the coveted spots are emailed directions only a few days earlier to minimize the possibility of discovery.  Guests are greeted at the door with champagne and, over the course of nearly four hours, served exquisitely prepared seasonal dishes with wine pairings. This concept may not be entirely new, but Hidden Kitchen really does it right, making eating in seem like even more of a treat than eating out. In a food capital like Paris, that’s no small feat.

TECHNOLOGY: Poken

These little guys are like an electronic business card wrapped up in an adorable, colorful shell. Load a list of your social networks onto one and take it out for a spin. All it takes to transfer info between friends is a quick high-five of the Poken’s palm. Connect it back to a computer and instantly see the virtual profiles of all the people you’ve just met in the real world. Marvel that something so small can be so useful.

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK: Arapaima

By far the most fascinating thing about this strange creature is the fact that it actually breathes air. If its sheer size hadn't been enough to warn you to keep your distance, consider this: the arapaima not only eats fish, but is also known to gulp down birds that get too close to the water's surface. The arapaima is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, reaching up to 450 centimeters in length. It is hunted for food in the Amazon and admired as quite the spectacle in aquariums around the world.

Watch a video of humans interacting with the arapaima here.
